🎶It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, everywhere you look…
This time, I’m folding the Bethlehem Star Kusudama designed by Fredy Tong.
A while back, during a trip to Austria, I believe it was Strasbourg, I came across the most beautiful red stars decorating the streets and the path leading up to the fortress.
I think they’re called Moravian Stars.
I’ve thought about those decorations many times since.
So in 2023, unable to find an origami version of the Moravian Star, I decided to try my hand at the Bethlehem Star Kusudama by Fredy Tong, the closest thing I could find.
How to fold the Origami Bethlehem Star Kusudama designed by Fendy Tong
The video tutorial is the best place to start — it’s clear and easy to follow.
But here’s a quick overview: you’ll need 60 pieces of paper in total: 48 pieces of 7.5 cm (A units) and 12 pieces of 10 cm (B units), with a 3:4 ratio between them.
You start with a square sheet and cut it to a 7:8 proportion.
The modules themselves aren’t difficult to fold, and assembly is broken into three stages:
- Join 4 A units with 1 B unit to form a bundle.
- Connect two of those bundles together.
- Use the 5:3 structure to connect all the bundles into the final form.
And just like that, your Bethlehem Star Kusudama is complete.
